Science

The Science Department endeavours to bring science alive, offering a range of exciting experiments and investigations to stimulate the children’s thoughts and ideas; carefully tailored to support and enhance the curriculum.

Activities are designed to suit the range of abilities in each class, allowing them to be accessible by all whilst challenging inquisitive minds.

Pupils in Years 3 to 8 as well as in the Section Français Bilingue, are taught by specialist science teachers in a fully equipped science laboratory.

Children in Year 3 through to Year 6 follow an enhanced National Curriculum relevant to their age group. The specialist teaching and facilities allow children confidently to develop their scientific skills and knowledge beyond that outlined by the National Curriculum.  This ensures that children are fully prepared for Grammar Schools at the end of Year 6, the rigorous Common Entrance syllabus or taking a Scholarship to Senior School.

Children in Years 7 and 8 follow the Common Entrance Syllabus in the three Sciences, Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Pupils are taught how to develop their scientific ideas through a range of investigational skills, planning and designing practical experiments. Children are fully prepared to solve problems and to use practical experiments to understand scientific concepts, resulting in success every time  at Common Entrance.

Exploring the World around us, encouraging scientific questioning is fundamental to successful learning in science.  Our excellent grounds and facilities are a real inspiration allowing us to take the classroom outside, looking at plants, hunting for invertebrates, pond dipping and investigating different habitats to name just a few of the activities offered. We also run an Environmental Club where conservation is encouraged, including the development of a garden, using sustainable and recycled materials wherever possible.
