Maths Week 2012
The week got off to a wonderful start with the arrival of the Happy Puzzle Company on Monday morning. The children in classes 1 and 2 were challenged to complete a range of exciting mathematical tasks in small groups. They all really enjoyed working out how to make 24 penguins balance on the iceberg, make a series of castles with bricks and fit 2D shapes into a bigger shape. The staff found they were also itching to have a go themselves!
Many activities had been planned with each class during the week, such as cooking, milkshake making, measuring how tall we are etc. We have tried to take lots of photographs of our activities so that you can see the wide range of topics which can be considered mathematical.
On Wednesday the children all took part in a Maths Trail. They were put into mixed age groups and moved around the school, visiting each classroom to complete a range of Maths based tasks such as making a symmetrical pattern, building the tallest tower, fitting tangrams onto a shape and finding out what they could do in just one minute. The older ones loved helping the younger ones and the teachers enjoyed seeing every child taking part.
On Friday we had asked children to bring in lots of 1p pieces and in the afternoon we set them out in a long line in the hall so that we could measure them. The line eventually measured 27m, which surprised all of us! The total of all the coins came to just over £25.00 We are going to add this to our collection for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
