Pre-Prep Science Week goes with a Bang!

Explosions, snake handling, magic flowers and ice balloons were just some of the exciting activities which the Pre-Prep children took part in during their recent Science Week.

The children were involved with a whole host of science-based activities, organised by the Pre-Prep staff.  We were delighted to welcome scientists from the local community who demonstrated experiments, as well as a ‘mini-beast’ workshop by Zoolab and an assembly on birds by Simon Pollard of the RSPB.  One of our parents, Mrs Williams-Jones, got the children involved in some very visual experiments, including growing crystals, flowers changing colour and ‘bubbling pots’.

During the mini-beast workshop, the children were able to touch a range of animals, including a snake, tarantula, rats and a crab.

Steve Head who teaches science at the Duke of York’s Academy demonstrated how he could make fire by combining certain chemicals, with explosive results!

The staff also organised a series of ‘sensory’ workshops for all the classes from Nursery to Year 2.

Head of Pre-Prep, Julia Exley, said:

“Following a successful art week last year, we thought it would be a fantastic learning experience for the children to take part in a whole week of science-based activities.  It was wonderful to see how much the children enjoyed the hands-on experiments.  It really got them thinking about science as a really exciting subject.

I would like to thank our visiting scientists for sparing the time to share their knowledge and expertise with the children.”
