Northbourne goes green

You will require the latest Flash Player 9 to play this video.

This year our focus has been on the environment. It's been a great year and within 7 months we had achieved our bronze Eco Status which is terrific. Our goal has been to make all children aware of the need to save the environment and to stimulate ideas on how we can all play our part. The year started with a green audit of our "carbon footprint" - what we spend on oil and electricity etc.

A Green Team to represent the school was set up and they are responsible for bringing forward suggestions to be implemented across the school.  These have included changing our daily use of plastic cups for reusable plastic cups and  encouraging car sharing amongst families.

All year groups have lead an assembly on green themes throughout the year and a number of activities are being actively pursued such as ensuring that we recycle our waste.

Our most exciting project was the design and build by Year 5 our our Green Goblin car. The car is provided by Green Power and aims to teach children about alternative sources of power. The children worked in teams to design and construct a car using light and cheap materials. The teams were involved in the design and construction of the car, learning about powering it, and the branding of the car and the team Tshirts.  They have all learnt to drive the car and will be able to join other school teams later in the year to put their skills to the test in races.

In the art department we have spent time creating works of art from items for recycling such as old milk cartons and easter egg boxes.

It's been a great year and there's more to come next year so watch this space.
